Malaysia’s opposition leaders credited their stunning by-election victory in the Johor constituency of Tanjung Piai on Saturday to the cooperation within the newly formed Muafakat Nasional – the unity pact between Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Umno.
BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS president Hadi Awang claimed that the election result was a sign of “revived Chinese support” and the resistance of voters against “political extremism”, purportedly practised by ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan (PH).
