Public health inspector II Dhanraj Ramnarine said there was a confirmed case of a pregnant woman who had contracted Zika in Boissierre Village, Maraval and he urged residents to keep their surroundings clean.

Ramnarine was speaking yesterday as Health Minister Terrence Deyalsinngh, acting chief medical officer Dr Clive Tilluckdharry and other officials toured the community.

They distributed nets, pamphlets on Zika awareness and conducted thermal and dyna -fogging in the battle against the virus which is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

The anti-Zika campaign followed a U-trail which began at Vallot Street and moved to Burnett, Harold and William streets in the Boissierre Village community, which houses about 300 people.

“We wanted to sensitise the residents about the need to clean up their surroundings and their homes,” said Ramnarine. “We wanted to alert them about the threat of ChikV (chikungunya), dengue and Zika. The minister went house to house chatting with Boissierre residents and distributing literature. We chose Boissierre because it is a flat area and there was one case of Zika.

Resident Vilma Benjamin-Watts, who lives at William Street, said: “It was good to see Deyalsingh.

Normally ministers do not come out and see about the people. They don’t care about how the people are living, but it was good of him to come out and empty bottles.

She is having the baby. She is about 32. She is having her third baby. Everybody in the village knew about it. She was sick, she had fever, rash and body aches. She was sick at home for three days. She went to Maraval Health Centre. She thought she had ChikV. When they did the test, they confirmed it was Zika. She goes to the hospital clinic every week. She is being monitored, she is coming along. They will be returning on Tuesday to complete the dyna-fogging.”
