T&T’s first female Calypso Monarch, Calypso Rose, will be presented with the WOMEX 16 Artist Award in recognition of her outstanding artistry and her valuable contribution to the arts sector internationally at the 22nd edition of WOMEX in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain, from October 19 to 23, in Spain. 

Calypso Rose, McCartha Linda Sandy-Lewis, 76, began her illustrious career at a time when men dominated the calypso arena. Her career spans over 50 years. Today she is known as the Calypso Queen of the World. At WOMEX 16, Calypso Rose will perform live as the closing act of the entire event. 

She will be accompanied on stage with the Calypso band Kobo Town whose leader is Drew Gonsalves, a Trinidadian residing in Canada.

Womex is an international networking platform for the world music industry. The annual five-day event comprises a bustling trade fair, showcase festival, conference and film programme, as well as festive opening and award ceremonies.
